About

A community-owned network, built by neighbours

Bridge is not a conventional telecommunications company. It is a way for communities to organise together so that good internet becomes affordable.

Our principle

Technology is the enabling infrastructure; community ownership and collective organisation are the operating model.

Groups of about 15 to 50 people pool resources to obtain a good internet connection and distribute it locally using affordable wireless technologies. Every Bridge group elects its own three-person committee and decides together how its network is built and run.

Bridge Network is a Project of Takura Trust.

  • Community-owned: the group holds the decisions and the equipment.
  • Community-run: a chairperson, secretary and treasurer lead each group.
  • Cooperative: costs are shared so one late payment does not disconnect everyone.
  • Technology-enabled: mesh Wi-Fi and point-to-point radio do the last mile.
  • Geographically organised: groups form around real places and hubs.
  • Affordable: collective buying beats a connection for every home.

Governance

Every group has three leaders

Chairperson

Leads the group, speaks for it and keeps members organised.

Secretary

Keeps records, member lists and communication flowing.

Treasurer

Manages contributions centrally and pays suppliers and ISPs.

Leaders are verified before approval: identity, proof of residence and police clearance are uploaded by the leader and checked by the Bridge team. Read the procedure.
